Although Australia has consistently provided attractive post-study work benefits to international students, authorities have recently unveiled an exciting update: the extension of work rights for specific programs, allowing for a maximum of 8 years of post-study work rights. This presents a fantastic opportunity for prospective international students considering studying in this hospitable country, as well as those who are already pursuing their educational endeavors in Australia.

    Important Updates

    1. Extension of Post-Study Work Rights

    • The Australian Government has introduced a significant extension of post-study work rights for international graduates who hold degrees in areas with verified skills shortages. This measure aims to bolster the pathway to skilled employment. Effective from July 1, 2023, eligible international higher education graduates will benefit from an additional two years of post-study work rights.
    • The extension will result in the following changes to post-study work rights for select degrees in areas with verified skills shortages:
      • Post-study work rights for select bachelor’s degrees will be extended from two years to four years.
      • Post-study work rights for select master’s degrees will be extended from three years to five years.
      • Post-study work rights for all PhDs will be extended from four years to six years.
    • The extension mentioned above is in addition to the current one to two years of additional work rights offered to eligible students who study, reside, and work in regional areas.

    2. Increase in Allowable Work Hours Cap from July 1, 2023

    The Government has further revealed an enhancement in the maximum allowable part-time working hours for international students during their studies. Effective July 1, 2023, the cap will be raised from 40 to 48 hours per fortnight.

    Which English language tests are accepted by Australian institutions?

    The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the preferred English language proficiency test accepted by most institutions in Australia.
